On 2 November the British four-piece Turin Brakes announced that their seventh album Lost Property would be released in January 2016. Turin Brakes have released a steady stream of albums following their debut in 2001 and each album has provided fans with a chance to listen to a band develop their style and confidence. With each album they have integrated new influences. From the get go I was a fan and their anthemic hit Underdog, from 2001, remains a staunch favourite on my playlists.
I think the reason I’ve loved their music all these years is because they created an atmosphere when you pressed ‘play’ – one where you got lost in their acoustic-led melodies, soft enchanting vocals and leading lyrics. There is enough storytelling in their work to feel like, as you listen, you are part of this band’s scene – their local, a place that is full of sincerity and passion, and it’s a good place to be when you listen to music.
While we are all aware of the many bands that haven’t continued past the first couple of albums and remain in the glass bauble of the past, Turin Brakes have and this shows their commitment to music. Their new single is called Keep me around; it’s great to hear the familiar and lovely vocals from Olly Knight. The melody is light and catchy and the acoustic sounds fresh so I’m (eagerly) anticipating good things from the new album.
