With UK Coffee Week swiftly approaching in Brighton to raise funds for coffee-growing communities, The Verse’s Csenge Krokovay tells us all we can expect from some of our favourite cafes…
Have you heard of Brighton’s Coffee Week? If not, and you missed the last one, don’t panic – nationwide celebration of coffee and fundraising campaign, UK Coffee Week, returns to Brighton in a few days, and this year it is promised to be the largest ever – with over 40 cafes set to take part across the country.
From the 10th – 16th April, UK Coffee Week promises workshops, events and competitions for coffee lovers all across Brighton, from Small Batch at Goldstone Villas in Hove to Marwood’s on Ship Street in the Lanes. More importantly, each cafe is donating money from every cup of coffee sold to bring clean water and sanitation to coffee-growing communities worldwide as part of charity organisation, Project Waterfall.
Why is it important?
Coffee production is one of the most powerful industries, with people drinking at least 500 billion cups of coffee each year. We’re all aware of the importance of fair trade production, but it’s also undeniable that pure water is an essential element of a good cup of coffee. Water is essential not only for the farmers who grow our coffee, but also for the 663 million people around the world who don’t have access to safe water – and need our help.
Clean water is more than important: it is essential for our coffee, people’s wellbeing and for a better life. Ergo, UK Coffee Week believes that, with collaboration, we have the power to make a positive change to the communities that grow our coffee. And it’s now something Brighton’s coffee creators are passionate about too.
So, what can we expect to see next week?
To start with, Small Batch Coffee Roasters will be donating 50p from every cup sold – with a special Blue Note filter on offer just for the week. We can also expect a whole coffee tasting morning at Moksha Café, which donates 5p from every cup of coffee. There’s a raffle at Marwood Bar & Coffeehouse with amazing coffee-themed prizes, such as a giant espresso martini cake, a bottle of Kahlua and bottomless espresso martinis for two. YUM.

Last year, UK Coffee Week raised over £260,000, which they hope to top in next week’s event. And with Uni deadlines quickly approaching, there’s no better time to grab a coffee and help to raise money for a better future!
