There is something about a record that has always had an appeal with music fans, whether it be those who grew up with vinyl or those living through modern day revival. Recently, vinyl records went from being found at your local boot sale for 50p to £50 each almost overnight, this skyrocket in price making vinyl the only form of music technology to make its way back into modern society. Although not all retailers have returned to selling vinyl, there is still one day that celebrates the sound medium in all its glory: Record Store Day.
Since the first Record Store Day in 2008, the event has grown more and more popular due to limited stock of records; it is no surprise why people often begin queueing up hours before shops open. London may be the main hub for Record Store Day, but us Brightonians refuse to be left out, with plenty of places for us to get our precious vinyl, limited CDs and tapes. At this event, there is always a nice mixture of genres to pique the interest of any music lover.
Brighton’s three main stockists, Cult Hero, Resident Records and Rarekind Records will, of course, be participating. Beginning the celebration from breakfast is Resident Records, which will be opening from 8am-5pm. Stocking everything from David Bowie to Motorhead (and everything in between), you should be able to find anything, however if you’re looking for something that isn’t on the list, give them a ring and they will see what they can do. They’ll also be hosting a few performances on the day, including Too Slow To Disco and Hannah Peel & Her Music Box.
Of course, Record Store Day is not just about celebrating vinyl, but all music. From midday until late, there will be multiple bands playing at the Brighton Dome, including Tigercub, Gang, Normanton Street, Yumi and the Weather, Calico, Via Tirana, Catherine Ireton, Della Lupa and Barnacles. Wristbands to this event cost £8+b.f., and are available here.
If you’re looking to hang around in one spot for a good day, then Resident Records seems like the place to go. However with all three stores within close proximity to one another, I’d hit them all to have a better chance at getting the vinyl you want.
