FESTIVAL PREVIEW: The Great Escape @ Brighton, 17/05/18 – 19/05/18

The Verse’s Lorenzo Ottone previews The Great Escape Festival, which takes place in Brighton from 17th – 19th May 2018. Tickets available now!

The best European festival for new music is back with more than 400 up-and-coming artists to discover across Brighton’s most intimate venues.

When it comes to music, we all have that friend who claims to have been listening to them for years before anyone else. If you want to be that person, then The Great Escape is the right festival for you.

There is nothing better than witnessing future superstars playing to crowds of 100 people or less in the comfort of a Brighton pub.

However, The Great Escape is more than just this. It is full of the youthful excitement and hype that only the underground can give. It is a festival for those who want to catch emerging trends and have avoided arena gigs.

Another trademark making The Great Escape so unique is the multiplicity of venues. From pubs to hotel halls, tiny street stages to churches, the whole city is turned into an open-air venue for festival-goers to explore. The vibrant and eclectic Brighton is given an extra artistic buzz during the festival days.

As usual, The Great Escape focuses on indie-pop; this year it features some of the most interesting acts the scene is currently offering. Gus Dapperton, The Orielles, Superorganism, Bad Sounds and Goat Girl are just some of the names promising to light up the festival.

Among the artists to watch out for are French psych, jazzy, cinematic band Aquaserge; members have played with the likes of Tame Impala, Stereolab and Acid Mother Temple.

Another one to watch is Scottish duo Happy Meals. Their sound mixes synth and instrumental patterns with the delicacy of French lyrics.

The festival brings acts from a wide variety of countries including the Netherlands, the major guest nation this year.

American singer Børns, with sophisticated 1960s-flavoured pop and harmonies à-la Brian Wilson and Lana Del Rey moods, is undoubtedly one of the most interesting foreign acts.

With its fame as the leading festival for new music and seaside location, The Great Escape promises to be a fun-packed and artistically engaging appointment.

After the growing success of the previous 11 editions, the festival is, more than ever, the perfect pre-summer weekend escape.

The Great Escape takes place in Brighton from 17th-19th May.

Weekend tickets for young adults start from £35. For further information on tickets and line-up visit greatescapefestival.com
