The Verse’s Tamara Stidwell previews Alternative-Folk musician Johnny Flynn’s new UK tour, kicking off at St George’s Church in Brighton this Friday.
Johnny Flynn grew out of London’s new-folk scene with his band Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit. They were most notably known for their acclaimed debut album A Larum. Along with the likes of Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons, and Noah & The Whale, Flynn creates raw acoustic-folk honoured by his distinctive very-English vocals. His lyrics are rich with influence of Yeats and Shakespeare and this blonde haired folk-philosopher will be landing in Brighton’s St George’s Church on the 27th March.
Johnny Flynn has impressively kept up his high-profile on stage and screen as both the artist and the actor (yes he’s Dylan in Netflix’s Lovesick). Yet Flynn’s musical talent continues to blossom as he adds to his catalogue with this latest EP, ‘Sillion’, released on Transgressive Records. After doing the rounds in America, he is now sweeping the Uk with his latest tour, which includes Bimingham’s O2 Academy2, and a popular-demand gig, later this year, at London’s Roundhouse.
With stirring and slow tones that organically blend into guitars and organs, Flynn’s dynamic new sound, critics are saying, “feels like the soundtrack of a Western adventure movie.” If you enjoy an Americana-indie-folk vibe, with strings, jangly guitars, and soft indie chords then Johnny Flynn will be hitting all the right notes at this week’s gig.
Once deemed by The Times; “the next poster boy of the nu-folk scene”, after 10 years in the game, I am looking forward to seeing Johnny Flynn, in this UK tour, touch on the old and the new. And mostly to discover how Mr.Flynn’s new Americana-Country folk blend, according to the Austin Chronicle, manages to create “a sound both timeless and timely”.
