ART PREVIEW: David Shrigley’s Life Model II @ Fabrica, 14/04/18

The Verse’s Chloe Lawrence previews David Shrigley’s Life Model II at Fabrica as part of Brighton Festival launching 14th April 2018

It was announced earlier this year that resident of Brighton and Hove, David Shrigley had been selected as this year’s Guest Director of the Brighton Festival. Shrigley is a visual artist who is best known for his bizarre and comical drawings. He recently had the honour of showcasing his work on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar square up until last month. Having exhibited internationally in locations across Australia and the U.S, Shrigley’s return to modest Brighton anticipates a fantastic display of culture articulated in an enjoyable, personal fashion.

Not only will Shrigley be curating the festival, he will be showcasing some of his own pieces along the way. Life Model II, on display at Fabrica from the 14th April to the 25th May 2018, will transform the venue into a real, life drawing classroom. Shrigley’s long-standing aim to make satirical reference to the everyday will be brought to life in this exciting event. The class will invite the visitors to the exhibition to take part themselves. However, instead of using a real life model for reference, visitors will be depicting Shrigley’s enormous nine-foot sculpted model. The drawings that visitors create will then themselves become part of the exhibition, filling up the walls within Fabrica. The exhibition is free to the public so there’s no excuse to miss it. This piece promises a warm sense of community and the hope that visitors truly immerse themselves in Shrigley’s make believe life drawing class.

For more information regarding the exhibition, be sure to visit the Brighton Festival website here.
