SPORT: Brighton Handball Club in need of players

Inspired by the London 2012 Olympics, Juan Reig had the desire to bring handball to the people of Brighton and now he provides the opportunity for you to get involved.

The Spaniard organised an open training session in Preston Park in the summer of 2012 to which nine people attended. Since then, the Brighton Seahawks were formed.
With the support of Brighton and Hove Sport Development team, the Deans Leisure Centre was arranged as a training base for the club.
Reig told The Verse, ‘I have played handball all my life and developing this unknown sport in Brighton is something that is very special to me.’
The BHC men’s side currently sit in second place in the South Regional League but Reig wants to evolve the Seahawks further.
This opportunity is not only just open to men, Reig impels any women that are interested in the sport to get involved.
‘We are trying to create the first women’s team in Sussex. Currently we have about five to ten women training regularly but we need a minimum of twelve players to create a team. We need more women to play handball!’
But it is not just female players the Seahawks need.
‘We are always looking for new players either experienced or beginners. Anyone who would like to try handball is welcome to join our training sessions.’
So, whether male or female, experienced or a beginner, you are welcome to join the Seahawks training sessions on Thursdays from 7pm to 8pm at Deans Leisure Centre.
Reig also wants to create a development side for the Brighton Handball Club.
‘The men’s team is doing very well but the only way in which we can evolve is to have a youth team.’
From Saturday 18th January, Reig welcomes juniors aged between sixteen and eighteen years of age to get down to Portslade for a training session from 10:30 to 11:30.
