PREVIEW: The Kooks @ Brighton Centre, 25/11/2017

The Verse’s Lorenzo Ottone reviews The Kooks before their return to The Brighton Centre on Saturday 25th November 2017

Indie-rock stars The Kooks are making their return to their hometown Brighton, as part of a tour in support to their Best Of…So Far album

The new record celebrates the 10th anniversary of the release of their first album Inside In/Inside Out in 2006. The Kooks will perform their classic repertoire but have announced B-sides and new songs will complete the setlist.

The Kooks made their way into the Olympus of British indie-rock thanks to a string of formidable singles. Some of these include Naïve, She Moves in Her Own Way, Seaside, Always Where I Need to Be, Shine On and the more recent Happy (Junk of the Heart). Released in the golden days of skinny jeans and guitar indie.

Singer-songwriter Luke Pritchard and the other original members formed the band as a group-project in 2004 when students of Brighton BIMM. Distinctive, their look was made of cowboy-like hats and provided them with their first gig.

Their sound draws inspiration from 60s British guitar pop, American troubadour Bob Dylan and David Bowie, whose Hunky Dory song Kook, provided the idea for the band’s name.

More than 10 years after their debut, the Kooks are still part of British pop establishment as the release of a ‘Best Of’ album indicates. The gig will probably cause a tear to shed on the cheeks of those who grew up in the indie heydays and will for sure make new and old fans dance and emotion at the same time.

The Kooks play Brighton Centre on Saturday, November 25th.
