PREVIEW: Skinny Living @ The Hope and Ruin, Brighton, 17/03/2019

The Verse’s Charley Gale previews Skinny Living’s gig at the Hope and Ruin on the 17th March 2019.

Wakefield’s own Skinny Living is a band of four unique, incredibly soulful voices. Lead singer Ryan Johnston, Guitarists Will Booth and Danny Hepworth and Cajon player Rhys Anderton will be coming to the Hope and Ruin this month on their latest tour of the UK.

Throughout the years, their music has morphed and developed into the soulfully acoustic style that it is now. With songs such as Fade Away, Breathe and Only I, it is evident that their songs have been shaped around personal experiences. Skinny Living’s songs are full to the brim of emotion. The lyrics reflect on struggles with substance abuse, issues in relationships with other people and themselves. Each song has a unique, powerful message. Because of this, it is difficult not to feel so connected with the band and their stories.

I had the pleasure of watching one of their sets at the British Summertime Festival at Hyde Park two years ago. Their performance- especially Johnston’s clear connection to the songs- made for an incredible atmosphere. I felt as though I was on this life journey with them. Their hard work is truly inspirational and motivating. Success is inevitable for this band. It is only a matter of time before they receive the recognition that they deserve.

If you enjoy voices such as James Bay, Jamie Lawson, and Catfish and the Bottlemen then I definitely recommend that you check the band out!
