PREVIEW: Still I Rise, Brighton Festival @ Brighton Dome, 22/05/2019

The Verse’s Alice Giraudi previews the Still I Rise event at the Brighton Dome. This will be happening for Brighton Festival on 22nd May 2019.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise

I’ll always remember the first time I read a Maya Angelou poem. Caged Bird had me gripped in its talon, I remember a wave of emotion washing over me, shedding a tear or two, and thinking to myself of how a couple of words put together on a page has just had such a powerful effect on me.

As soon as the Brighton Festival programme came out, I knew I’d have to go see the dance rendition of Still I Rise, another of Angelou’s renowned poems. It will be performed by TRIBE and choreographed by Victoria Fox-Markiewicz. Its description seemed to embody what Angelou hoped to convey in her poem: “Raw, gutsy emotive and visceral […] where the dancers push forwards with uplifting determination.”

I cannot wait to see this visual representation of the emotions brought forth in Angelou’s poems, as dance, poetry, and performance have so often been interlinked by the emotional power they can have on an audience. TRIBE are known for showcasing bold, female-led dances and Fox-Markiewicz has countless accolades and accomplishments within the dance sector; this dream team will definitely put on a performance as memorable as Maya Angelou’s poems themselves.

Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.
