STUDENT VOICES: Stay fit and socialise. The student guide to ‘Sport Brighton’

So you’re now a Brighton Uni Student…
Having joined the University of Brighton, some of the most beneficial, enjoyable and worthwhile hobbies to acquire are the vast sporting opportunities available here by the coast. Brighton Uni is renowned for its sporting class; and with what’s in store for you… you’ll soon see why!

Under the helpful umbrella known recently as ‘Sport Brighton’; our gyms, individual classes, societies and recreational sports are now easily available, full of opportunity, and so cheap it’s impossible to say no! Brighton Uni has an aim – ‘to increase sporting prospects, improve the range of health and fitness opportunities and provide a great service’. So if it’s for fun, competition, to meet likeminded people or just to improve your fitness, Sport Brighton is for you!

What we have to offer…
Whether you’re based on Falmer, Moulsecoomb or about in Brighton itself, the gym facilities available, especially for us students, are second to none. From personal experience, the ultra-modern, state of the art, £9m ‘Sport Brighton’ development centre located on Falmer Campus is the one to beat! With a 6 court sports hall, fully equip fitness gym and two fitness studios; you really are spoilt for choice. Built and opened in 2010, it’s been a welcome addition encouraging new and old students to get fit! Memberships for students are at rock-bottom prices and the benefits are endless. Open Monday to Friday 7.30am to 10pm and Saturday and Sunday 8.30am to 5pm, there is always time to fit in a workout! It’s great for meeting new people and to unwind from a stressful day of lectures. As well as the sports centre, Falmer can boast an impressive 5 outdoor football pitches (home to our very popular team!) and a few rugby fields for good measure. The amenities on campus are fully available to all students, staff and even some are open to the public. To find out more about Falmer’s amazing facilities, check out www.brighton.ac.uk/sportbrighton/facilities/brighton for details!

A stone’s throw away from the new Sport Brighton centre on Falmer campus is also Brighton Health and Racquets Club; an external facility offering even more opportunity including three swimming pools, indoor tennis clubs, an additional fitness suite, shops and cafe’s as well as physiotherapy clinics and a hair and beauty salon! All Brighton students and staff are permitted to discounts to club memberships so if you’re really serious about getting fit this school year – this is the perfect deal for you to complete your University Sports set! .

It’s not only the Falmer inhabitants who can enjoy the benefits of sports facilities on their doorstep! Moulsecoomb campus’ Cockcroft Sports Centre is situated 2 miles from the seafront and a stone’s throw from Moulsecoomb station and the surrounding Uni buildings. Accessible here are sprung-floor sports halls, a 35 station fitness suite including resistance machines, free weights and a high-level cardiovascular floor. However, if these don’t tempt you enough, Moulsecoomb’s Sports Centre is most famous (Or infamous!) for its indoor 15m climbing wall – home to the University Climbing Society!

University of Brighton Societies…
Bringing me on nicely to the Uni’s sporting societies- Brighton is host to many clubs and organisations dedicated to every sporting desire. From football to netball, rugby to hockey, rock climbing to skiing, to even more obscure ones such as ultimate Frisbee, there will be a society to suite EVERYONE! It’s an excellent way to meet a solid group of friends, all interested in the same hobby or sport. It offers training schedules, social events, games, trips and tournaments all over the country with other universities and really aids the more competitive of players among you all! Societies can be joined at the Fresher’s Fair in your first week where you can submit your name and email and await the trials period a few weeks later. Trials will happen at different times throughout the year and anyone is welcome to come along.
As well as the health benefits of joining Sport Brighton, the social perks are among some of the finest in university life. The sports department are renowned for hosting some of the best fresher’s events around, and also a weekly ‘Social’ night in Oceana, Brighton where teams will receive a free entry and queue jump privilege, as well as the bonus of each week being a new and innovative fancy dress. The social side of Sport Brighton will benefit your entire University stay, helping you make amazing friends and experience that Brighton team-spirit!

Now it’s YOUR turn…
SO! If you’re considering joining up to University Sports this academic year, look no further! Get yourself down to the Fresher’s fair, or get online to www.brighton.ac.uk/sport to find out all the details! GOOD LUCK! And HAPPY SPORTING!
