ALBUM REVIEW: Crooked Colours, Vera

The Verse’s Chanelle Manton previews Crooked Colours’ debut album, Vera.

Crooked Colours’ debut album, Vera, can only be described as a nostalgic melange of indie and electronic music.  The Australian trio, made up of Philip Slabber, Leon Debaughn, and Liam Merrett-Park, effortlessly create a sound akin to that of The XX, Crystal Castles, Alt-J, and Milky Chance, all combined into one fabulous 10-track album, released via Sweat It Out on 23rd June 2017.

Kicking off with the infectious Flow, lead-singer Phil’s sultry vocals carry the listener on a journey of ambient, toe-tapping tracks, perfect for the office or the festival line-up. Vera may be yet to make an appearance on Spotify’s Office Music playlist, but the boys have already (unsurprisingly) appeared at Parklife, Wonderland, and Laneway Festival, and are due to hit the circuit hard next summer. Plymouth, the second track, is seemingly the most popular on Soundcloud, with 17k listens so far and an incredibly contagious riff and punchy lyrics. Ending with Perfect Run, the album ends on a dramatic and emotive note, leaving the listener desiring more melodic anthems.

The album artwork is a piece of art in itself. Depicting various plants in abstract colours, the botanical theme seems to fluently marry with the music and create an atmosphere for the listener. This band is definitely unique, and they are excited to introduce their indie-electronica sound worldwide.
